This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Ajacicyathidae are sponges (Porifera) associated in the fossil record with archaeocyathan carbonate buildups, particularly in Cambrian-age strata.
A Botoman (Cambrian Series 2) archaeocyathan assemblage from carbonate clasts in the Shackleton Range (Antarctica) includes multiple archaeocyath taxa, illustrating how sponge-related fossil material can be recovered from carbonate lithologies and associated biota.
In that study, the carbonate clasts are described as wackestone, floatstone, and boundstone and include associated microfossils/biota such as Epiphyton, Renalcis, Batenevia ramosa, and trilobites.
The reported Botoman archaeocyathan assemblage comprises 34 archaeocyath species distributed among 12 archaeocyath genera, and the paper reports multiple new archaeocyath taxa from Antarctica. The same work also proposes a new archaeocyath family (Shackletoncyathidae) in the context of the Shackleton Range material.
