Visual Description
Agromyza varifrons is a small fly, with adults measuring approximately 1.7 mm in length for males and 2.0 mm for females.[2] The lower frons is yellow or orange, while the upper portion is brown or black; the frons projects slightly above the eye in profile.[2] The thorax is dark with a gray coating, and the legs are black with brown knees and tarsi.[2] The halteres are yellow.[2] Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset confirm the presence of these small, dark-bodied flies with distinctively colored frons and legs.[1]
Biology and Ecology
Agromyza varifrons (Coquillett, 1902) is a leaf-mining fly.[3][2] Larvae create narrow, linear mines that develop into blotch mines by the third instar.[2] Larval development takes 4–5 days at 25–26°C, followed by pupation in the soil.[2] Pupae are initially slightly yellow, turning reddish-orange, with a development period of 10–15 days.[2] The species has been recorded infesting young lower-level leaves of Celtis caucasica Willd.[2]
