Visual Description
Museum-specimen images of Agelas nemoechinata available via GBIF (Naturalis Biodiversity Center) show the characteristic encrusting-to-mounding growth form typical of many Agelas (Agelasidae) sponges, with the overall sponge body appearing as a thick, irregular mass rather than a branching morphology.
Chemistry / Chemotaxonomy
A study of Agelas sponge metabolites discusses the “oroidin group” of bromopyrrole alkaloids (including oroidin and related metabolites such as sceptrin and oxysceptrin) as chemotaxonomic markers within the lineage that includes Agelasida.
The same work reports detection of related sceptrin/oxysceptrin/nakamuric-acid-like derivatives from Agelas material and notes “slight variations”/related compounds isolated from Agelas cf. nemoechinata.
