Visual Description
Museum specimen images associated with Agelas nakamurai in biodiversity collections show sponge morphology consistent with preserved demosponges (specimen-level views rather than in situ photographs) from the genus Agelas.
Bioactive compounds and preliminary screening (literature)
A 2024 study using specimens identified as Agelas nakamurai reported preliminary cytotoxicity screening of solvent fractions and an active subfraction against breast cancer cell lines.
- The study processed a sponge sample identified as Agelas nakamurai (spicule-guided taxonomy) for secondary-metabolite extraction and cytotoxicity screening, with solvent partitioning into fractions including EtOAc, n-butanol, and water.[2]
- In cytotoxicity assays against MDA-MB-231 cells, the EtOAc fraction showed the strongest activity among the tested partitions (reported IC50 = 13.33 µg/mL), while n-butanol and water fractions were less potent (IC50 values reported as 1,430.44 µg/mL and 756.34 µg/mL, respectively).[2]
- The most active subfraction (F7) from chromatographic purification of the EtOAc fraction had reported IC50 values of 10.677 µg/mL (MDA-MB-231) and 15.154 µg/mL (MCF-7).[2]
- The same subfraction was also reported to reduce viability in HEK-293 cells (~6% viability at 25 µg/mL), suggesting cytotoxicity not limited to cancer cell lines.[2]
- LC-MS/MS profiling of the active subfraction F7 associated key Agelas-derived metabolites including agelasin-D and ageloxime-D.[2]
Distribution and taxonomic status
