This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Field photos and preserved specimens under this taxon are consistent with the common “elephant ear” morphology reported for Agelas sponges: encrusting to massive forms forming broad, ear-like lobes/expanses with a relatively smooth to subtly uneven surface, typically presenting an overall orange to orange-brown coloration in situ (e.g., images from citizen-science and museum specimen records).
Agelas clathrodes is an accepted species name (authored as (Schmidt, 1870)) within the family Agelasidae. Its basionym is given as Chalinopsis clathrodes Schmidt, 1870. [2]
Records in Global Biotic Interactions associate Agelas clathrodes with multiple shrimp species of the genus Synalpheus (interaction type reported as “symbiontOf”). [3]
