Visual Description
Agathomyia wankowiczii is a small fly characterized by a compact, robust body form typical of the family Platypezidae. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct, rounded thorax and a slightly tapered abdomen. The wings are relatively large and clear, often held in a characteristic position that highlights the venation pattern. The body exhibits a dark, often metallic or shiny coloration, which can appear black or dark brown depending on light reflection. The legs are relatively slender, and the hind tarsi are often noticeably thickened, a common feature in many flat-footed flies.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
Agathomyia wankowiczii (Schnabl, 1884) is a Palaearctic species distributed across North and temperate Europe and the Russian Far East.[2] Its larvae are specialized, developing within the bracket fungus Ganoderma applanatum. They induce the formation of characteristic, peg-shaped galls on the underside of the fungal brackets.[2]
In the Czech Republic, the species is classified as vulnerable (VU).[2] Within the Gemer region of Slovakia, it has been recorded from the Zádielska dolina valley in the Slovenský kras National Park.[2]
