Visual Description
Based on observations of museum specimens, Agathomyia talpula exhibits the characteristic body form of the family Platypezidae, commonly known as flat-footed flies. The specimen displays a compact, robust thorax and a distinctively shaped abdomen. The wings are relatively large in proportion to the body, with clear venation patterns typical of the genus. The legs are slender, with the tarsi of the hind legs often appearing flattened or broadened, a diagnostic feature for many members of this family.[1]
History and Classification
Agathomyia talpula was originally described by Hermann Loew in 1870 as Callomyia talpula.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Agathomyia.[2]
