Visual Description
Based on examination of preserved specimens, Agathomyia obscura exhibits the characteristic body plan of the family Platypezidae, commonly known as flat-footed flies. The specimens display a compact, robust thorax and a distinctively shaped head with large, prominent compound eyes. The wings are relatively large in proportion to the body, featuring a venation pattern typical of the family, with a membrane that can appear iridescent under certain lighting conditions. The legs are slender, with the hind tarsi often showing the characteristic flattened or broadened appearance that gives the family its common name.[1]
History and Classification
Agathomyia obscura was described by the entomologist Charles Willison Johnson in 1916. The original description was published in the journal Psyche as part of his studies on the family Platypezidae.[2]
