Visual Description
Agathomyia cinerea is a small fly, characteristic of the family Platypezidae, commonly known as flat-footed flies. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a generally dark, greyish-brown body coloration. The wings are typically clear or slightly smoky, and the legs exhibit the characteristic flattened tarsal segments on the hind legs, which are diagnostic of the family.[1]
Distribution and Habitat
Agathomyia cinerea is a rare Palaearctic species with a distribution primarily centered in northern Europe, extending from Great Britain and Fennoscandia to European Russia and the Russian Far East.[2]
The species is considered scarce and is rarely collected. It shows a strong affinity for montane environments, typically occurring at elevations above 800 m. In Central Europe, it is associated with old, natural forests, including those with Fagus and spruce, and is often found on scree slopes. Records from the Jizerské hory and Krkonoše mountains in the Czech Republic highlight its preference for cold, mountainous forest habitats.[2]
Ecology and Phenology
In Central Europe, the seasonal activity of A. cinerea is brief, occurring over a few weeks around the turn of September and October. In more northern regions, such as Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the activity period is broader.[2]
