Visual Description
Members of the genus Agathomyia are small flies. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, they exhibit a compact, often robust body form typical of the family Platypezidae.[1] Many species display distinct coloration, with some exhibiting dark, sometimes metallic or patterned bodies, and others showing more uniform, muted tones.[1] The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, and the legs are often slender, sometimes with specialized structures on the tarsi.[1]
Biology and Ecology
The genus Agathomyia is a group of flies within the family Platypezidae, commonly known as flat-footed flies.[2] Many species in this genus are associated with fungi, where their larvae develop.[3] For example, Agathomyia wankowiczii larvae develop in the bracket fungus Ganoderma applanatum, where they form characteristic peg-shaped galls on the underside of the fungus.[3] Other species, such as Agathomyia antennata and Agathomyia unicolor, are known to develop in the fungus Bjerkandera adusta.[3]
