Visual Description
Agapophytus borealis is a stiletto fly characterized by a slender, elongated body typical of the family Therevidae. Observations from available imagery indicate that the species possesses a distinct, somewhat metallic or patterned abdominal coloration, often featuring bands or markings that contrast with the base color of the cuticle. The wings are generally clear or slightly infuscated, held in a characteristic position that reveals the venation patterns diagnostic of the genus. The head is relatively large with prominent, holoptic or dichoptic eyes depending on the sex, and the antennae are typically forward-projecting.[1]
Classification and History
Agapophytus borealis was described by entomologists Shaun L. Winterton and Michael E. Irwin in 2001. The description was part of their phylogenetic revision of the genus Agapophytus (Diptera: Therevidae: Agapophytinae).[2]
