Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Afrozavrelia kribiensis exhibits characteristic chironomid morphology.[1] The specimens display a slender, elongated body typical of the family, with well-developed, plumose antennae in males and long, thin legs.[1] The wings are generally clear with reduced venation, consistent with the genus's placement within the Chironomidae.[1]
Afrozavrelia kribiensis was originally described by Kieffer in 1923 as Zavrelia kribiensis based on specimens collected in Cameroon and southern Africa.[2] While it was initially maintained within the genus Zavrelia by Freeman in 1958, it was later reclassified into the genus Afrozavrelia by Harrison in 2004.[2] This taxonomic change was prompted by significant morphological differences observed across all life stages compared to other members of the genus Zavrelia.[2]
