Visual Description
Afrosyrphus varipes is a flower fly characterized by a moderately robust, pilose body and notably long, slender antennae.[2] Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal that the hind legs are densely covered in long, dark pile, particularly on the first tarsomere.[1][2] Females of the species are distinguished by an entirely orange second abdominal tergite.[2]
Biology and Ecology
Afrosyrphus varipes is the type species of the genus Afrosyrphus, which is restricted to the Afrotropical Region.[2] The larvae of Afrosyrphus are aphidophagous, feeding on various aphid species, and are characterized by a relatively broad, strongly flattened body shape.[2]
