Visual Description
Members of the genus Afrodontomyia are soldier flies (family Stratiomyidae) that exhibit characteristic features of the family, including a generally robust body form. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that these flies often possess distinct abdominal patterns and coloration, which can be useful for identification.[1]
Taxonomic History
The genus Afrodontomyia was described by James in 1940.[2] Taxonomic revisions have clarified the composition of the genus. For example, Odontomyia impressa Curran, 1928 and Odontomyia protrudens Curran, 1928 have been reclassified as junior synonyms of Afrodontomyia gigas (Brunetti, 1926) and Afrodontomyia erecta (Brunetti, 1926), respectively.[3]
Additionally, several species previously placed in other genera have been transferred to Afrodontomyia. Afrodontomyia erecta (Brunetti, 1926) and Afrodontomyia flammiventris (Brunetti, 1926) were transferred from Odontomyia, and Afrodontomyia rufiventris (Curran, 1928) was transferred from Stratiomys.[3]
