This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Aethiopomyia gigas exhibits typical muscid fly morphology.[1] The specimens display a robust body structure with characteristic wing venation and thoracic patterns consistent with the family Muscidae.[1]
Aethiopomyia gigas was originally described by Stein in 1906 under the name Spilogaster gigas.[2] Recent taxonomic reassessments have clarified the placement of related taxa; specifically, the genus Paleotachina Townsend, 1921, was found to be a synonym of Aethiopomyia Malloch, 1921, and the species Paleotachina smithii was synonymized with Aethiopomyia gigas.[3] This determination followed an examination of the holotype of P. smithii, which was identified as an inclusion in copal rather than amber.[3]
