Based on observations of preserved specimens, members of the genus Aedokritus exhibit the characteristic body plan of the family Chironomidae, including a slender, elongated abdomen and well-developed wings. The specimens typically display a brownish coloration, with distinct, segmented structures visible along the thorax and abdomen. The legs are relatively long and slender, consistent with the general morphology of non-biting midges.[1]
Aedokritus is a genus of non-biting midges belonging to the family Chironomidae and the subfamily Chironominae.[2] The genus is primarily distributed in the Neotropical region.[2]
Taxonomic studies have provided updates on the classification and distribution of several species within the genus. For example, Aedokritus platycnemis Edwards has been redescribed based on holotype and additional material from Brazil, and the known distributions of other species, such as Aedokritus coffeatus and Aedokritus souzalopesi, have been extended.[2] The genus is recognized as an accepted name in global taxonomic databases.[3]
