Aedes sudanensis is a member of the subgenus Mucidus. Phylogenetic analyses based on the COI gene indicate that Aedes sudanensis clusters within a distinct group containing other members of the subgenus Mucidus, such as Aedes alternans, separating it from other Aedes subgenera.[2]
