Visual Description
Aedes polynesiensis is a mosquito species characterized by typical culicid morphology. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show the characteristic slender, segmented body, long legs, and prominent, compound eyes typical of the genus Aedes.[1] The specimens exhibit a dark, patterned exoskeleton with distinct abdominal banding and scaled thoracic regions, consistent with the diagnostic features of the species.[1]
Ecology and Vector Competence
Aedes polynesiensis is an endemic mosquito species found in the Polynesian islands.[2] It is recognized as a vector for various arboviruses, including dengue virus.[3]
Experimental studies have evaluated the vector competence of Ae. polynesiensis for the Zika virus (ZIKV). Results indicate a weak competence for ZIKV, with laboratory-infected mosquitoes showing low infection and dissemination rates and no infectious saliva detected in the study conditions.[2] The species is also known to harbor Wolbachia endosymbionts.[3]
