Visual Description
Aedes nigrinus is a mosquito species characterized by a slender, elongated body typical of the family Culicidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a dark, mottled appearance on the thorax and abdomen, with delicate, multi-segmented legs and prominent, plumose antennae. The wings are narrow and transparent, extending beyond the tip of the abdomen.[1]
Identification and Distribution
Aedes nigrinus (Eckstein, 1918) was originally described under the basionym Culicada nigrinus[2]. The species has been identified in the New Forest of southern England, which established it as a new country record for Britain, bringing the total number of recorded mosquito species in the region to 36.[3]
Historically, Aedes nigrinus has been frequently misidentified as the morphologically similar Aedes sticticus (Meigen, 1838). Research has established diagnostic differences for both adult and larval stages to assist in accurate identification.[3]
