Ecology and Vector Competence
Aedes mediovittatus is a mosquito species distributed throughout the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean, where it frequently shares larval habitats with Aedes aegypti [2].
Laboratory research has confirmed that Aedes mediovittatus is a competent vector for all four serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1–4) [2]. In comparative laboratory studies, Aedes mediovittatus demonstrated infection rates similar to Aedes aegypti for DENV-1, DENV-2, and DENV-3. However, Aedes aegypti was found to have significantly higher infection and transmission rates for DENV-4 [2].
Given its vector competence and distribution in areas such as Puerto Rico, it is recommended that dengue prevention and vector control programs in the Caribbean include Aedes mediovittatus in their monitoring and control strategies alongside Aedes aegypti [2].
