Visual Description
Aedes lineatopennis is a mosquito species characterized by specific morphological features. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species possesses a narrow vertex covered with scales and upright forked scales that are not restricted to the occiput.[1] The scutellum is covered with uniformly narrow scales.[2]
Biology and Ecology
Aedes lineatopennis is a member of the subgenus Neomelaniconion. It is known as an aggressive biter that feeds on both humans and animals.[2] The species has been identified as a potential vector for several arboviruses, including West Nile virus, Rift Valley fever virus, and Japanese encephalitis virus, and has been associated with the transmission of dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis).[2]
Morphologically, it can be difficult to distinguish from Ae. mcintoshi, and historical misidentifications have occurred.[2]
Distribution and Genetics
While predominantly located in Africa, the species has extended its distribution to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Indian subcontinent.[2] Genetic studies have revealed significant global diversity, with 21 haplotypes identified in one study.[2]
