Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Aedes cyprius exhibits typical culicid morphology.[1] The specimens display a slender body structure characteristic of mosquitoes, with long, thin legs and prominent, forward-projecting mouthparts (proboscis). The coloration observed in these images includes a mix of brown and yellowish-gold tones, particularly on the thorax and abdomen, which aligns with its common name "guldtömygga" (golden mosquito). The wings are narrow and membranous, typical of the order Diptera.[1]
Status and Distribution
Aedes cyprius was described by C.S. Ludlow in 1920.[2] While historically recognized, recent long-term monitoring efforts in Germany (2011–2019) failed to document the species, leading to the conclusion that it is likely extinct in that region, having not been reported for nearly a century.[3]
