Visual Description
Aedes cataphylla is a mosquito species. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, specimens exhibit typical culicid morphology, including a slender body, long legs, and a pair of wings.[1]
Biology and Ecology
Aedes cataphylla is widely distributed across Northern Europe, Siberia, and parts of North America.[2] It has also been recorded in high-altitude regions, such as the Khunjerab Pass on the border of Pakistan and China.[2]
The species is univoltine and overwinters in the egg stage. Larvae typically develop in open meadow pools created by melting snow and spring water. Adult females are known to be active biters during both day and night in wooded mountain habitats.[2]
Aedes cataphylla is known to be a host for certain microsporidian pathogens, including Amblyospora cataphyllus and Amblyospora khaliulini.[3]
