Visual Description
Based on examination of preserved specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Aedes arborealis exhibits typical culicid morphology.[1] The specimens display the characteristic slender body form of the family, with long, delicate legs and prominent, forward-projecting mouthparts (proboscis). The wings are elongated and membranous, typical of the order Diptera. Due to the nature of the preserved museum specimens, fine details such as specific scale patterns or coloration are difficult to resolve definitively, but the overall structural configuration is consistent with the genus Aedes.[1]
Taxonomic History and Distribution
Aedes arborealis was described by Bonne-Wepster and Bonne in 1920.[2] The species is recognized within the genus Aedes and is also associated with the subgenus Howardina in some taxonomic classifications.[3] In the literature concerning the mosquito fauna of Ecuador, Megarhinus arborealis Shannon & Ponte, 1927 has been noted as a synonym for Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) guadeloupensis (Dyar & Knab, 1906).[4]
