Visual Description
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Aedes annulipes exhibits typical mosquito morphology, characterized by a slender body, long, delicate legs, and a pair of functional wings.[1] The wings are membranous with distinct venation patterns, which are often used in morphometric studies for identification.[2] The overall coloration is generally brownish or yellowish, consistent with its common name in some regions (e.g., "gulbrun skogsmygga").
Identification and Classification
Aedes annulipes was described by Johann Wilhelm Meigen in 1830, originally under the name Culex annulipes.[3] It is a member of the genus Aedes and is sometimes classified within the subgenus Ochlerotatus.[4]
Identification of Aedes annulipes can be challenging due to its high morphological similarity to related species, such as Aedes cantans.[2] Studies utilizing geometric morphometric wing analysis have shown that these two species are difficult to distinguish based on wing geometry alone, and phylogenetic analysis of the Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene region further supports their close evolutionary relationship, as they do not cluster separately.[2]
