This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Members of the genus Aedes are mosquitoes characterized by distinct morphological features. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show that many species, such as Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, exhibit striking patterns of white or silvery scales on a dark, often black or brown, background.[1] These patterns frequently include longitudinal stripes on the thorax and banded markings on the legs and abdomen.[1] The overall body form is typical of culicids, featuring a slender abdomen, long, thin legs, and a pair of wings.[1]
Aedes is a genus of mosquitoes that includes several species of significant medical importance.[2] Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are recognized as primary vectors for globally significant arboviruses, including dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses.[3]
The global distribution of these vectors is currently the widest ever recorded, with established populations present on all continents, including North America and Europe.[3] This range expansion is largely attributed to increased global trade and travel.[3]
