Nomenclature
The currently accepted scientific name is Adreus australiensis with the original combination given as Raspailia australiensis Ridley, 1884.[2]
Visual Description
Specimens imaged in museum holdings (preserved invertebrate zoology material) show Adreus australiensis as a sponge with a relatively compact, upright habit in many views, with a dark external surface and contrasting lighter internal/inner regions visible where the body is broken or sectioned in the photographed material.[2]
Phylogenetic / Systematic Notes
A recent molecular phylogenetic study of Tethyida emphasizes caution when interpreting some morphological characters (e.g., stalk-related characters) at higher taxonomic levels, because such traits can be homoplasious across lineages; while this work does not provide species-level treatment for Adreus australiensis, it informs how family/genus-level character evidence should be evaluated within Tethyida.[3]
