Visual Description
Adoxomyia cinerascens is a Palaearctic soldier fly characterized by a dark body covered with light or silvery pubescence.[2] Diagnostic morphological features include the structure of the antennae, which possess an elongated flagellum consisting of seven transverse rings and an apical style, and the trapezoidal scutellum, which bears short, light-colored spines.[2] Sexual dimorphism is evident in the head structure: males are holoptic with a triangular frons, while females have a nearly parallel-sided frons with a shallow central depression.[2]
Biology and Ecology
The larvae of A. cinerascens have a flattened body with segments covered in small, light-colored polygonal plates, giving them a cellular appearance.[2] They develop in the decaying, moist roots of drying Ferula plants, where they can occur in high densities.[2] In regions such as the Kyzylkum Desert, adults emerge in May.[2]
