Visual Description
Adapsilia coarctata is a fly characterized by a slender body form typical of the family Pyrgotidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show individuals with elongated, brownish-patterned wings that are largely hyaline.[1] The head features prominent eyes, and the antennae possess a relatively long pedicel.[2] A diagnostic subocular spot is present on the head.[2]
Distribution and Biology
Adapsilia coarctata is the most widely distributed species of its genus in the Palaearctic region. Its range spans across Europe (including Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia) and Asia (including Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan).[2] Despite this broad range, the species is considered rare in collections, particularly within Europe.[2]
In males, a row of conspicuous black setulae is present on the lateral margins of sternites 2 and 3, a trait hypothesized to be related to sexual behavior.[2] The species was described by Waga in 1842.[3]
