Visual Description
Acupalpa species are stiletto flies characterized by their slender, elongated body form typical of the family Therevidae. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a diverse range of coloration and patterns across the genus, with some species exhibiting distinct abdominal markings or bands.[1] The head is generally prominent, and the wings are typically clear or lightly patterned, often held in a characteristic position at rest.[1]
Overview
Acupalpa Kröber, 1912 is a genus of Australian stiletto flies belonging to the subfamily Agapophytinae.[2] The genus is closely related to Pipinnipons Winterton, 2001, which is considered its sister group.[2]
A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus has recognized 19 species.[2] This revision included the description of 12 new species and the transfer of A. imitans (White, 1915) and A. albimanis (Kröber, 1914) into the genus.[2] The genus was originally described by Otto Kröber in 1912.[3]
