Visual Description
Actina chalybea is a species of soldier fly. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the adult fly exhibits a metallic, often dark or bluish-black, coloration on the thorax and abdomen.[1] The body structure is typical of the family Stratiomyidae, with a somewhat flattened appearance and distinct wing venation patterns visible in high-resolution images.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
Actina chalybea (Meigen, 1804) is a spring-active species of the family Stratiomyidae found in the Crimea.[2] Adults have been observed swarming under forest canopies during May, with collections showing a male-biased sex ratio.[2] The larvae are terrestrial saprophages that develop in organic debris within sandy soil.[2]
Its distribution encompasses Central and Southern Europe (north to Germany), the Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), North Africa, Turkey, and Iran; it has not been recorded in Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, or the Netherlands.[2]
