Visual Description
Members of the genus Acrosticta are flies characterized by distinct wing patterns, which are typical of the family Ulidiidae, often referred to as picture-winged flies.[1] Observations of specimens show that these flies possess a robust body form. The wings exhibit dark, patterned markings, which are a diagnostic feature for identification within the group.[1]
Taxonomic History and Revision
The genus Acrosticta has been subject to taxonomic review to clarify the placement of species previously misassigned to other genera. For instance, the species Cephalia fulvicornis Bigot, 1886, originally described from California, has been transferred to Acrosticta as Acrosticta fulvicornis (Bigot, 1886).[2]
Research suggests that Acrosticta fulvipes Coquillett, 1900, also from California, may be a junior synonym of A. fulvicornis. The holotype of A. fulvicornis shares significant diagnostic traits with A. fulvipes, including wing venation and leg coloration. While some differences in the vestiture of the face and frons have been noted, these may represent individual variation or effects of specimen condition.[2]
