Acrosathe vialis is a member of the family Therevidae, commonly known as stiletto flies. Members of this family are generally characterized as slender to moderately thick-bodied flies, typically ranging from 2.5 to 15 mm in length. Their bodies are often covered in varying degrees of pilosity (hairiness), tomentum, or pruinescence.[2]
Acrosathe vialis is classified within the subfamily Therevinae.[2] The genus Acrosathe was established by Irwin and Lyneborg in their 1980 revision of the Nearctic Therevidae, which sought to define genera based on synapomorphies.[2]
Adults of the family Therevidae possess a characteristic hemispherical head and three-segmented antennae. Their wing venation is distinct, with cell cup closed behind and cell d having veins m1, m2, and m3 arising from its apex. Female terminalia are notable for a large, conspicuous sternite 8, which serves as a digging-anchoring apparatus during oviposition, whereas male terminalia follow a relatively uniform plan.[2]
