Visual Description
Acrophthalmyda sphenoptera is a bee fly characterized by a robust, densely pilose (hairy) body, typical of many members of the family Bombyliidae. Observations from photographic records indicate that the body is covered in thick, yellowish-brown to golden hairs, which provide a bee-like appearance. The wings are generally hyaline (clear) or possess subtle patterning, and the venation is characteristic of the genus. The head is relatively small in proportion to the thorax, with large, prominent compound eyes.[1]
Taxonomic History
The species was originally described by Hermann Loew in 1855 under the name Bombylius sphenopterus.[2] It is currently accepted as Acrophthalmyda sphenoptera (Loew, 1855).[2]
