Acrophthalmyda paulseni is a member of the family Bombyliidae, commonly known as bee flies. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic robust, hairy body form typical of many bombyliids.[1] The body is covered in dense, often pale or yellowish setae, and the wings are typically clear or have subtle patterns, which are diagnostic features for identifying species within this family.[1]
Ecology and Behavior
Acrophthalmyda paulseni has been documented as a floral visitor of the perennial vine Bomarea salsilla (Alstroemeriaceae) in the Maulino forest of central Chile.[2] Observations indicate that the fly exhibits potential pollinating behavior by contacting the reproductive structures of B. salsilla flowers while feeding.[2]
