Taxonomic Status
Acrochaeta mexicana Lindner, 1949, was historically recognized as an accepted species within the genus Acrochaeta (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) [2]. However, a comprehensive taxonomic revision and cladistic analysis of the Neotropical genus Acrochaeta has proposed that Acrochaeta mexicana is a junior synonym of Acrochaeta flaveola Bigot [3].
Visual Description
Based on examination of preserved specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Acrochaeta mexicana exhibits the characteristic morphology of the family Stratiomyidae [1]. The specimens display a slender body form typical of the subfamily Sarginae. Key visible traits include a distinct, somewhat metallic or shiny coloration on the thorax and abdomen, and wings that appear clear or lightly tinted with characteristic venation patterns consistent with the genus. The legs are relatively thin and elongated.
