Visual Description
Acrochaeta are slender, wasp-like flies characterized by a distinct, elongated body form. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a body with prominent yellow and black banding patterns, particularly on the abdomen.[1] The thorax also exhibits longitudinal striping, and the wings are typically translucent or lightly tinted.[1]
Biology and Classification
Acrochaeta is a Neotropical genus within the subfamily Sarginae (Diptera: Stratiomyidae).[2] A taxonomic revision has expanded the number of recognized extant species in the genus to 14.[2] Cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of the genus, with diagnostic morphological characters identified in the head, thorax, and abdomen.[2] Within the genus, the Acrochaeta flaveola species group is recognized based on characteristics of the male and female terminalia.[2]
