Visual Description
Acraspisa similis is a member of the family Therevidae, commonly known as stiletto flies. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal characteristic features of this genus. The flies exhibit a slender, elongated body form typical of the family. The thorax and abdomen are covered in fine, dense setae (hairs), which contribute to a somewhat fuzzy appearance. The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, with distinct venation patterns characteristic of the Therevidae. The eyes are prominent and occupy a significant portion of the head, a common trait in this group.[1]
History and Classification
Acraspisa similis was described by the entomologist G.H. Hardy in 1939. The original description was published in the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales as part of his work on Australian Diptera.[2]
