Visual Description
Acnemia angusta is a small fungus gnat. Based on examination of museum specimens, the species exhibits characteristic features of the genus Acnemia. The body is slender, typical of many mycetophilids, with long, delicate legs. The wings are clear or slightly smoky, with characteristic venation patterns common to the family.[1]
Distribution and Ecology
Acnemia angusta Zaitzev, 1982 is a species of fungus gnat that is considered uncommon in Europe, exhibiting a scattered distribution.[2] It was originally described from the northwestern part of European Russia and has been recorded in Russian Karelia, Finland, Sweden, Bulgaria, and Belgium.[2] While previously characterized as potentially boreal-mountainous, its presence in Belgium suggests a broader distribution.[2]
In southern Sweden, the larvae have been reported to develop in wood-growing fungi within deciduous forests.[2] Reliable identification of the species requires examination of the male terminalia.[2]
