Visual Description
Members of the genus Acnemia are small flies typical of the family Mycetophilidae. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a slender body form characteristic of many fungus gnats.[1] The wings are generally clear or lightly patterned, and the legs are relatively long and thin, which is a common feature within the family.[1]
General Information
Acnemia is a genus of fungus gnats in the family Mycetophilidae, first described by Johannes Winnertz in 1863.[2] The genus has a broad distribution, with species found across Europe, Asia, and North and South America.[3]
Recent taxonomic work has addressed historical confusion regarding certain species. For example, Acnemia sibirica Ostroverkhova, 1979, which was omitted from many databases due to the lack of explicit type designations in its original description, has been formally redescribed and validated.[4]
