General Information
Acidogona is a genus of tephritid flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) established by Loew in 1873.[2] These flies are known to breed in the flowers of Hieracium species (Asteraceae: Cichorieae).[3]
The genus Xenochaeta Snow, 1894, is considered a junior synonym of Acidogona.[3]
Visual Description
Based on observations of preserved specimens, Acidogona species exhibit characteristic wing patterns, which can be strongly sexually dimorphic in some species, such as A. stecki and A. dichromata.[1],[3] A key diagnostic morphological feature is the microtrichosity of the scutellum; in A. melanura and A. stecki, the scutellum is entirely microtrichose, whereas it is bare and shiny in A. dichromata.[3]
