Visual Description
Aciculites orientalis is a marine sponge. Based on observations of preserved specimens, the sponge exhibits a firm, compact structure. The surface texture is typically rough or granular, reflecting the dense arrangement of its skeletal elements. The overall form can be irregular or massive, often showing a distinct, somewhat rigid consistency characteristic of the family Scleritodermidae.[1]
Biology and Research
Aciculites orientalis was originally described by Dendy in 1905.[2] Recent research has investigated the chemical and biological properties of this species. In a study of marine sponges from Sri Lanka, A. orientalis was collected from a depth of 52 meters at Nintavur.[3]
The organic extract of A. orientalis has demonstrated potent antibacterial activity in microdilution assays. Specifically, researchers identified bioactive fractions effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.[3]
