Visual Description
Aciculites cribrophora is a marine sponge. Based on examination of museum specimens, the sponge exhibits a solid, often somewhat irregular or massive growth form. The surface texture is typically dense and can appear slightly rugose or uneven.[1]
Symbiosis
Aciculites cribrophora is known to host symbionts belonging to the candidate phylum 'Tectomicrobia' (also known as 'Entotheonellaeota') [2]. Metagenomic studies have identified a specific symbiont, Candidatus Proxinella opulenta' (strain AC1), within this sponge [2]. This symbiont is characterized by a high richness of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), similar to members of the genus Entotheonella' [2].
