Visual Description
Members of the genus Acericecis, such as Acericecis ocellaris, are small flies characteristic of the family Cecidomyiidae.[2] Observations of the genus in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show delicate, slender bodies typical of gall midges, with long, fragile-looking legs and antennae.[2] The wings are often clear or lightly patterned, and the overall morphology is adapted for their life cycle as gall-inducers on host plants.[2]
Ecology and Distribution
Acericecis species are known to be gall-inducing insects.[3] They have been documented interacting with various Acer species, including Acer nigrum, Acer saccharum, and Acer saccharinum.[4] Additionally, species such as Acericecis vitrina have been recorded in urban environments, such as in Slovakia.[5]
