Visual Description
Based on observations of preserved specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Acaulona exhibit typical tachinid fly morphology.[1] They possess a robust, bristly body characteristic of the family, with visible wing venation and compound eyes. Due to the nature of the museum specimen images, finer diagnostic characters such as specific chaetotaxy or detailed abdominal patterns are not consistently resolvable.[1]
Biology and Ecology
The genus Acaulona belongs to the family Tachinidae, a group of flies known for their parasitic larval stages.[2] Species within this genus have been studied for their potential as biological control agents, particularly against cotton stainers (Dysdercus spp., Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae).[3] For example, Acaulona peruviana was introduced in the Caribbean to manage Dysdercus populations, alongside the native Acaulona erythropyga, though these efforts did not lead to successful establishment.[3]
