Visual Description
Acartophthalmus nigrinus is a minute to small, dark-colored fly.[2] Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a compact, dark-bodied morphology typical of the family.[1] Key morphological features include large, divergent postocellar bristles and the absence of true vibrissae.[2] The wings exhibit a costa with only a humeral break, and the tibiae lack a dorsal preapical bristle.[2]
Ecology and Distribution
Acartophthalmus nigrinus is a Holarctic species and is considered the most commonly collected member of the family Acartophthalmidae, with higher abundance in boreal regions.[2] Adults are typically found in damp woodlands and forests, where they are associated with various forms of decaying organic matter, including wood, fungi, carrion, excrement, and rotten meat.[2] They have been observed on wood-decaying fungi on dead trees, suggesting a potential ecological association with fungal decay.[2]
