Visual Description
Acartophthalmus bicolor is a minute to small, dark-colored fly.[2] Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a body form typical of small acalyptrate dipterans, with a dark, sclerotized exoskeleton.[1] The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, and the legs are relatively slender.[1]
Ecology and Behavior
Acartophthalmus bicolor is a Holarctic species.[2] Adults are typically found in woodland habitats, where they are associated with various forms of decaying organic matter, including carrion, fungi, excrement, and rotten meat.[2] They have also been observed on freshly sawn tree stumps where sap is bleeding.[2]
Male A. bicolor exhibit territorial behavior on decaying organic matter, where they defend sites against other males by flapping their wings.[2] Larvae have been successfully reared from decaying meat.[2]
