Visual Description
Museum specimen images of Acarnus souriei show a preserved demospongian sponge with a firm, irregular body form (typical of Poecilosclerida), photographed in lateral view and as an entire specimen. Consistent with Acarnidae/Acarnus material, the sponge appears as a compact to lobate mass rather than an encrusting sheet.
Notes on classification and nomenclature
The genus Acarnus is diagnosed by the presence of the cladotylote spicule as a synapomorphic character of the genus.[2]
GBIF lists Acarnus souriei as an accepted species and indicates the original combination ** Acanthacarnus souriei** Lévi, 1952 (basionym). [3]
Distribution and records
A Zootaxa taxonomic study reports multiple Acarnus species from the Brazilian coast, including Acarnus souriei.[2]
