Dataset images for Acarnus erithacus (common name reported as the “red volcano horny sponge”) show a broadly encrusting to thickly lobate demosponge form with a distinctly reddish to orange-red coloration and a generally firm, “horny” texture (as inferred from morphology in the photographic records).
Notes on Biology and Materials
Acarnus erithacus is a demosponge (order Poecilosclerida). Research on non-verongiid Red Sea demosponge taxa (including Poecilosclerida members such as Acarnus spp.) provides evidence that sponge skeletons can contain the structural polysaccharide chitin, with analyses interpreted as supporting α-chitin in these skeletons.[2]
