Known visual material for the genus consists of an underwater field image labeled as Acantorna tahoma (Hymedesmiidae, Poecilosclerida).[1]
Acantorna is defined by the spicule organization typical of Hymedesmiidae but with a distinctive ectosomal organization of acanthose tornotes forming an ectosomal palisade. The choanosome is described as a confusedly plumose arrangement of acanthostyles, acantho-tornotes and arcuate isochelae; areolate pore-fields are absent.
In the original treatment, ectosomal spicules are described as acanthose straight diactines (tornotes), and the genus introduces acantho-tornotes (tornotes with completely acanthose morphology, unlike previously known tornotes that are smooth or only micro-spined at ends).
The genus is described as stalked and flabellate, and is based on the type species Acantorna tahoma.
On GBIF, Acantorna is listed as an accepted genus taxon (Lehnert & Stone, 2020).[2]
